Big Maths at Bankier

Big Maths is a teaching program we use at Bankier Primary to help our pupils develop strong numeracy skills. We know that children need to have a secure understanding of how numbers work and the confidence to manipulate them with ease.

Our Big Maths lessons are designed to be fast, fun, and highly interactive. Pupils take part in activities such as Brain Scanners and give quick-fire responses to their teachers. This creates a lively pace where children are expected to recall number facts instantly, moving beyond counting on fingers to working with true fluency.

To support this, we use child-friendly language. Instead of technical terms like commutative law or number bonds, we talk about Switchers and Learn Its. This approach makes abstract mathematical ideas more accessible and engaging, helping children build confidence, fluency, and ultimately, greater success in maths.
